Description
The historical discovery tour starts with a walking tour to the slave market and through the alleys of Santo Domingo’s Old town that are partly covered with wall paintings referring to the historical and cultural aspects of slavery such as religious syncretism. Subsequently you visit the rum museum, where you learn about the tools slaves used in the sugar factories. Then head west towards San Cristobal where well-preserved structures of antique sugar factories will give you an idea of the historical sugar and rum production which was accomplished solely by the power of oxen and above all slaves. This sight is of particular historical interest as the first uprising of slaves in the Americas took place here. You further visit the first hydroelectric sugar factory and have lunch at a typical restaurant where a Dominican specialty based on dough stuffed with meat and steamed in banana leaves is served.Includes
