Description

Altos de Chavón is an ancient Mediterranean-style town built above the Chavón River in La Romana, Dominican Republic. It houses a Cultural Center, the National Archaeological Museum and the so-called City of Artists. It also has a notable amphitheater. Its construction began in 1976, when it was necessary to blast a mountain of stone to open a road. Charles Bludhorn, president of an American company, had the idea of using stones to build a 16th century Mediterranean city. The construction was entrusted to the Italian Roberto Coppa, reflecting a medieval Italian city. The Chavón River, over which the city has a magnificent panoramic view, was the setting chosen for the recording of some famous films. Currently, the city receives thousands of daily visits from tourists from Punta Cana. Altos del Chavón has a design school, where we will find Fashion, Graphic and Digital Design, Fine Arts and Illustration. Discover the Taino museum and its relics as well as the Amber and Larimar museum. The amphitheater The Amphitheater is an iconic symbol of Altos de Chavón and Casa de Campo, it is the Altos de Chavón Amphitheater designed by the Italian artist Roberto Copa in 1976 and inaugurated in 1982 with the concert “Concerto para as Américas” (Concerto for the Americas) with Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rich, Heart and Carlos Santana on August 20th of that year. The architects were inspired by Greek culture to build the amphitheater. Dozens of important national and international artists have performed in this amphitheater with a capacity for more than 5,000 people.
