Description
The tour begins with a walking tour of Santo Domingo’s Old Town, visiting the former slave market and alleys featuring wall paintings that depict the cultural and religious aspects of slavery, including syncretism.
Next, visit the rum museum to learn about the tools slaves used in sugar factories. The tour then continues west to San Cristobal, where well-preserved ruins of antique sugar factories offer insight into historical sugar and rum production powered mainly by oxen and enslaved labor.
This area is historically significant as the site of the first slave uprising in the Americas. The visit includes the first hydroelectric sugar factory. Lunch is served at a local restaurant featuring a Dominican specialty: dough stuffed with meat and steamed in banana leaves.
