Description
Begin your walking tour at the Macorix Museum House of Rum. Discover the production and history of the Dominican Republic’s most renowned export product, with tastings included.
From there, wind down one of the oldest streets in the city, Calle 30 Marzo and Calle Imbert, until reaching La Chocolatería. Learn about the cultivation and production of Dominican chocolate, including tastings, of course.
Continue through town and encounter the striking, entirely pink Paseo Doña Blanca and the colorful Umbrella Street, both extremely popular photo spots. Nearby, the path leads to Island Treasures, a small souvenir shop for local gifts.
As you venture into the city center, highlights include Independence Park and the beautiful San Felipe Cathedral, ideal for soaking up local culture—often best paired with a typical Dominican ice cream.
Then, head to the Monsenor cigar factory, where you’ll observe cigar rolling and gain insight into this enduring tradition. From there, continue along El Malecón waterfront promenade, past the vibrant 'Puerto Plata' photo sign to the impressive Fortaleza San Felipe, historically significant and the oldest European structure in the area.
The final stop is the now hardly recognizable former railway station of Puerto Plata, marking the end of your immersive walking experience.
